CRYSTAL xx
Sakataki is the Crystal Stranger so I gathered up some factoids about crystals. Science!
Crystals are formed when
specific liquids and gases cool down and lose water. They are made
of molecules that fit together tightly. Crystals made up
of the same material all have the same shape, no matter what
the size.
If you categorize crystals by their physical/chemical properties the types are:
Covalent:
This is a crystal which has
real chemical covalent between all of the atoms in the crystal.
So really a single crystal of a covalent crystals is really just
one big molecule.
examples:diamond or zinc sulfide
Metallic:
Individual metal atoms sit
on lattice sites while the outer electrons from these atoms are able
to flow freely around.
examples:iron, copper, and silver
Ionic:
This is a crystal where the
individual atoms don't have covalent bonds between them, but
are held together by electrostatic forces.
example:sodium chloride
Molecular:
This is a crystal where there
are recognizable molecules in the structure and the crystal is
held together by non-covalent interactions like van der
Waals forces or hydrogen bonding.
examples:sugar
Crystals are used for
a number of things but they are mainly connected to the new age
movement. They are used for healing, focusing your energy, jewelry, and
in various religious ceremonies. Sakataki has been able to make them change shape
through spiritual/magical means. I believe he also uses the crystals to focus his
energy.
